By the time I produced this piece I had already for many years
been one hundred percent digital when producing concept art -
like many artists are. It just became more efficient and easy to
produce and distribute color artwork consistently.
This piece leverages a generous amount of photography as
well as open source software. GNU GImp is actually perfect for
many of the tasks I perform and I have made several graphic
novel projects with it to date. However lacking in "professional"
features and so called software elegance it is absolutely
unbeatable when it comes to price. It's free.
Although I agree that programs like Photoshop boast features
and support from years of development it is still basically a
program that is overkill for a lot of what I do. Gimp's basic toolset
and painting scheme is perfect for the way that I draw and the
most common and useful file formats are all supported.
As Gimp matures, I will be there with it - hopefully it'll still be free.
